• Balancing Care and Caution: A Deep Dive into School-Mandated Psychiatric Risk Assessments
    February 23, 2024
    11:30 am - 2:30 pm

 Credits: 3 CEU Credits

In this presentation, we explore the growing demand for school-mandated psychiatric risk assessments, driven by increasing concerns around student mental health and safety. We outline the key components that constitute an ideal risk assessment, including a multidisciplinary approach and a focus on contextual factors. To streamline the process, we introduce a school-based referral system that allows educators and healthcare providers to collaborate efficiently in identifying students in need of psychiatric evaluations. However, we also discuss the potential pitfalls and challenges associated with compulsory assessments, such as stigmatization, ethical dilemmas, and the need for highly specialized training for school staff involved in these evaluations.

ABOUT PRESENTER:

John Wilson, M.D. is a board certified psychiatrist specializing in child, adolescent, adult, and forensic psychiatry, practicing in Philadelphia. He completed his general psychiatry training at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, New York. Subsequently, he pursued his subspecialty training in child and forensic psychiatry at LSU in New Orleans and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. After completing his training, Dr. Wilson returned to Philadelphia to establish his private practice. Here, he offers clinical interventions for both children and adults and provides specialized independent medical examinations for civil, criminal, family, and immigration courts. Drawing from his training in clinical psychiatry and risk assessment, Dr. Wilson frequently conducts risk assessments and fitness evaluations for area employers and schools.
