In working with teens, psychologist Kimball Magoni has found that one is often confronted with defiant and oppositional behaviors that can thwart and sometimes terminate the helping process.  Resistant teens can frustrate and test the limits of even the most seasoned professionals.  Robert Gordon Ph.D., in Ethics & SelfCare (PPA), reports that regardless of the type of counseling one does, the more one understands countertransference, the more empathy one will have for one’s clients.  As a result, the progressive communications within the therapeutic relationship lead to greater growth and behavioral change.
