During nearly 18 years as the consulting school psychologist at Plymouth Meeting Friends School (PMFS), Rob Staples has created a curriculum to develop social and emotional competencies in students grades K through 6. This process has been fostered by commitment to Quaker values, such as mutual respect, community, and non-violent conflict resolution, which are part of the mission of PMFS to educate the whole child.

A synopsis of the evolution of this curriculum was presented, with an emphasis on the impact of developmental factors at each grade level. Themes that were addressed included building communication skills (e.g. the “Feelings Vocabulary”), enhancing self-awareness and self-management, teaching tolerance and respect for differences, 5th grade peer mediation training as a culminating activity, and preparing 6th graders for the transition into the post-PMFS world.

Rob presented materials including books, videos and activities that he has found helpful.
