Answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

Why or when would a school recommend that a student see a specialist?

  • If the student is not successful academically even though the school has implemented strategies to help.
  • If the school suspects that the student demonstrates additional needs outside of the realm of the school (e.g. emotional, academic remediation, speech & language, or social).

How does a private school referral work?

  • Most private schools offer parents 2-3 names of specialists. The final decision is left to the parents. Schools that are active in SOS frequently refer to SOS members, as they are able to work collaboratively to help the student. Direct communication between the referring person and outside specialist is most helpful in conveying the school's concerns or questions and subsequent findings.

What happens after the student sees the specialist?

  • Many private schools have learning specialists or academic support staff who work closely with professionals outside of the school setting. The school should do its best to follow the recommendations of the specialist, within the program or possibilities, to help the student meet with success. Information is provided through a detailed evaluation report and can be supplemented by a school conference including the specialist, parents, and involved school staff.

What is a learning specialist?

  • Every school follows a different model. However, in general, the Learning Specialist's job is to help the student meet with success in school. He or she may work directly with the student to remediate skills or work on strategies to accommodate for difficulties. He or she should also communicate directly with the student's teachers to help them make the necessary adaptations in their curriculum or set appropriate expectations for the student.

What role can psychologist/speech therapists/tutors play in a school setting?

  • Some schools have consulting specialists on staff or use the services of their local Intermediate Unit. Outside specialists may be invited in as consultants after observing &/or evaluating a child, or should maintain regular communication with teachers if providing direct service to a child such as therapy or tutorial support.
